What Are Popular Offset Printing Plate Sizes in Inches

In the offset printing production process, the printing plate size is a core fundamental parameter for adapting to printing equipment, controlling printing specifications, and managing production costs. Below, based on industry-standard data, we detail the mainstream offset printing plate sizes in inches to meet the production needs of different formats and printing presses.

I. Small Desktop/Office Offset Printing Plates

These plates are characterized by their small size and lightweight design, primarily suitable for office printing, small-batch invoices, flyers, and business card printing. They are a specification specific to small offset printing presses. Both positive PS plate and CTP plates have mass-produced standard sizes, offering excellent versatility.

Mainstream Common Sizes: 8.5×11 inches, 11×17 inches, 13×19 inches, 14×20 inches

The 8.5×11 inch size corresponds to the standard A4 paper size and is the most basic specification for office offset printing, mainly used for document and data printing. The 11×17 inch and 13×19 inch sizes are suitable for small-format quarto and slate printing presses and are widely used for small-batch advertising and brochure printing in stores.

PS plates of this size offer high cost-effectiveness and are suitable for short-run, small-batch printing; CTP plates of the same size offer higher imaging precision, meeting the needs of small-format, high-definition graphic printing.

II. Commercial Standard Offset Printing Plates

Commercial printing is the core application scenario for offset printing, covering mainstream products such as brochures, posters, packaging boxes, periodicals, and flyers. The corresponding plate sizes are the most widely circulated and readily available specifications in the industry. PS and CTP plates are completely interchangeable and compatible with small to medium-sized commercial offset printing presses.

Mainstream Commonly Used Sizes: 17×22 inches, 19×25 inches, 20×26 inches

17×22 inches is the standard half-page format, suitable for printing regular book and magazine inner pages; 19×25 inches and 20×26 inches are the main sizes for commercial quarter-page and half-page printing, balancing printing efficiency and finished product precision, and compatible with most domestic and imported commercial offset printing equipment.

In daily mass commercial printing, short-term and rush orders often use more cost-effective PS plates, while long-term orders and high-definition color printing prioritize CTP plates of the same size to avoid precision errors caused by PS plate exposure and retouching.

III. Large-Format Industrial Offset Printing Plates

For industrial applications such as packaging printing, large-format posters, outdoor advertising, and large-format book printing, large-size printing plates are required to fit full-size and extra-full-size offset printing equipment. These sizes primarily utilize CTP plates. PS plates, due to their high loss rate and low precision during large-format exposure, are only used for low-precision mass printing.

Mainstream and commonly used sizes: 23×35 inches, 25×38 inches, 26×40 inches, 28×40 inches.

23×35 inches and 25×38 inches are standard full-size offset printing plates, mainstream specifications for industrial printing, compatible with large commercial offset printing presses, and suitable for high-volume packaging box and large brochure printing. 26×40 inches and 28×40 inches are ultra-large format sizes, mostly used for outdoor advertising, large packaging, and special format printing. These require higher plate flatness and strength, and high-precision CTP plates are generally preferred to ensure uniform color and clear dots in large-format images.

Whether you choose PS or CTP plates, in addition to standard inch sizes, HC Printing also supports custom non-standard sizes.
